How to Trap Opposums in Live Animal Traps

It isn’t always a pleasant experience when an unwanted guest shows up at your home, especially if that guest is an opossum. If this is your case, you will want to trap it and get it out as soon as possible. The following is a guide to help you in trapping the opossum so you can live in your home peacefully without the fear of him waking you at night.

What Kind of Trap to Use

A trap that is 30-40 inches in length and 12 inches in height with one or two doors will be the best fit for an opossum.

Where to Place the Trap

You will want to place the trap according to where the opossum is making his home. If he is living in your attic or garage then you will want to put it in the middle of the room. If he has chosen to make his home in a crawlspace or under your porch, set the trap approximately three to five feet from the entrance of the space.

What Kind Of Bait to Use

Opossums prefer fruits and foods with strong scents, so placing apple pieces, canned pet food or fish would work the best.

Steps For Setting the Trap

1. Opossums are nocturnal so wait until dusk to set the trap.
2. Set the trap in a cool area and on a level surface. Place a brick on the top to avoid it from tumbling or rattling when the opossum is captured.
3. Place the bait inside the trap. For a one door trap, place it near the end of the trap just past the trigger plate. For a two door trap, scatter the bait on top of the trigger plate or hang it just above the plate. Be sure the bait is secure and will not get stuck between the door and trigger causing it to jam. You can sprinkle a small amount of the bait outside the trap to lure him in, but be careful not to capture the wrong animal.
4. Keep a close eye on the trap throughout the night and be sure to check it first thing in the morning. If you were not successful in catching the animal, remove the trap and reset it again at dusk.

Releasing the Opossum

Now that you have caught the animal you need to release it, but where?

1. Before attempting to trap the opossum, contact your game commission for information on the local laws for releasing the animal into a nearby forest.
2. After making arrangements for releasing the animal you will want to secure yourself with long sleeves and rubber gloves.
3. Place a cover over the top of the trap and place in a truck on top of newspaper or in a box lid.
4. When setting the trap out to release the animal, remember that opossum will play dead and not move. Use caution when opening the door and step away from the trap giving the animal time and room to escape.
